Common orthopedic problems in pets

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a common problem in both dogs and cats, especially in older pets. It causes pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of articular cartilage and can be caused by, for example, aging, obesity or injuries.

Hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a hereditary disease in which the hip joint does not develop normally, which leads to osteoarthritis and pain. This is especially common in large breed dogs, but it can also occur in cats and smaller dogs.

Luxating patella
This condition occurs most commonly in small breed dogs and causes the patella to slip out of place, leading to pain, lameness and osteoarthritis of the knee. In some instances, surgery is necessary to fix the problem.

Cruciate ligament injury
A tear of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee is a common orthopaedic problem in dogs. A cruciate ligament injury often requires surgical repair. This injury can cause pain and instability in the knee.

Orthopedic problems in pets can significantly affect their quality of life and mobility. It is important to be able to recognise when it is essential to take your pet to the vet for orthopedic problems.

When should you consult a vet about orthopedic problems?

Sudden and severe pain
If your pet is experiencing sudden and severe pain, it is important to seek veterinary advice. This could be a sign of a severe injury or illness that needs urgent treatment.

Prolonged lameness
If your pet limps for more than a few days, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian. Prolonged limping may indicate a more serious orthopedic problem that requires professional evaluation and treatment.

Changes in mobility
If your pet’s mobility decreases significantly or they avoid exercise, it is a good idea to take them to the vet. This could be a sign of a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis that needs treatment.

Abnormal Swelling or Tenderness
If you notice abnormal swelling or tenderness in your pet’s body, especially in the joints, it is important to get a veterinary evaluation. This could indicate arthritis or an injury that needs treatment.

General malaise
If your pet seems generally unwell or has a significant change in behavior, this may be a sign of pain or discomfort. A veterinarian’s assessment is important so that the underlying cause can be determined and treated.

Identifying and treating a pet’s orthopedic problems is key to maintaining their well-being. If you notice these signs in your pet, do not hesitate to consult a veterinarian. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve your pet’s quality of life and prevent more serious problems from developing.
